Hi everyone! Yesterday, Oct 02 was Gandhi Jayanti. On this occasion, I have decided to present an essay I wrote on Gandhiji that I submitted for a competition. I hope you like it!
FATHER OF THE NATION – MAHATMA GANDHI
A long time ago, there was a person who said something beautiful, something that would continue to ring in the ears of every citizen in the world for aeons to come. They say, he walked on these very grounds, wearing nothing but a white dhoti around his waist and a towel draped around his shoulders. He walked with a walking cane in one of his hands, and the other hand, they say, was always reaching out to do good deeds.
THE FATHER OF NATION
His name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as ‘Bapu’ by young children and Gandhiji by everyone else. He was a lawyer. It amazes me, to say that Gandhiji is like a God, yet, he isn’t. One will truly understand if Gandhiji is a God or not if one knows about his life. This essay consists of a small extract of Gandhiji’s life and his works.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhiji was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujrat. His mother’s name was Putlibai Gandhi, and his father’s name was Karamchand Gandhi. He married Kasturba and had four Sons – Harilal, Ramdas, Devdas, and Manilal.
DO OR DIE
There is a famous slogan told by Gandhiji to the Indian citizens during the Quit India Movement: Do or Die. This meant that “I’ll either free India, or I’ll give up my life.” When we see something wrong, we must check and see that if it’s a mistake or not. We should not sit back and watch. We must correct things for our level.
MY EXPERIMENT WITH TRUTH
This is one of the famous books that Gandhiji wrote. In this book, he starts from his childhood and describes his experiences of facing the truth and learning the consequences of lying. He always says that we must never lie, even if it gets us into trouble.
Untouchability was something that Gandhiji didn’t approve of. He saw people as equal. No one should be up or down. Gandhiji questioned everyone by asking why the ‘untouchables’ are not equal.
Gandhiji has been known by many titles. The dearest one is ‘Bapu’, given by Rabindranath Tagore. ‘Bapu’ means Father, and Gandhiji called so because everyone looks upon him as a father. Internationally, Gandhiji is known as ‘Mahatma Gandhi’. Even this title was given by Tagore. Another title,‘Father of the Nation’, was given by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose because Gandhiji encouraged all the Indians to help in freeing India.
MAHATMA GANDHI’S DEATH
Gandhiji was on a vigil in New Dehli, when Naturam Godse killed Gandhiji by shooting him. This incident happened on 30th January 1948 in New Dehli. This day is celebrated as Martyr’s day.
WHAT I LEARNT FROM GANDHIJI
I still don’t know if Gandhiji is a God or not. I have not even covered half his life. But from the parts of his life I know, I learnt that it’s not good to get angry and violent, and we should always tell the truth.
